Red Young & His Hot Horns

This is a band I’ve been writing for a long time. I grew up listening to early blues recordings of Jimmy Witherspoon, Ray Charles, Percy Mayfield, Big Joe Turner, Joe Williams – all the blues before the electric guitar became the dominant instrument in the blues. The band has horns – 2 trumpets and 3 saxophones (alto, tenor and baritone) with acoustic bass, drums and Red on piano, Hammond organ and vocals and features the best musicians in Austin. On occasions there are different configurations – 2 or 3 tenor saxophones, special guest vocalists (male and female) and instrumentalists. We stay in the early blues mode but also expand to include originals and complex interesting music – Count Basie, Charles Mingus, Quincy Jones, Dizzy Gillespie as well as original compositions.
