Red Young & Friends
Red Young & Friends is when I do larger events, such as Delbert McClinton’s Sandy Beach Cruise or Ottawa Blues Festival where I may be doing Solo Piano, Brannen & Red Show, Piano Trio, Red Young & His Hot Horns or playing with various artists and jam sessions. I have a very eclectic taste and […]
I have been playing the piano since 3 years of age. Started classical piano lessons at 5, have perfect pitch, gave my first recital at 10 and have never stopped. From my earliest memories, I can play every song, piece or composition. When I do a solo gig, concert, nightclub or piano bar (like on […]
Red Young Quintet
The Red Young Quintet first played together as a unit in 2016 and immediately got a great response from audiences. With Red Young/piano and keyboards, Brannen Temple/drums, Nick Clark/bass, Andre Hayward/trombone and Mike Malone/tenor & soprano saxophone, it is an exciting musical journey every time these musicians play together. The music includes a wide variety […]
The Piano Quartet is a more experimental jazz quartet while still staying a little traditional. It consists of acoustic piano, acoustic bass, drums and saxophone (soprano and tenor). As well as my own compositions, I have obscure songs by McCoy Tyner, Josef Zawinul, Wayne Shorter and others.
The Brannen & Red Show
Brannen Temple and Red Young have been playing together for a decade and a half. Many of the same influences, much of the same music they listened to. When it’s just the two of them – Brannen on drums and Red on the Hammond B3 organ, anything goes. They play a very wide variety of […]
Organ Trio features Red on Hammond B3 organ and vocals, with drums and tenor saxophone. We play primarily Soul Jazz – that period in American music that had a more funky and earthy sound to it – Charles Earland, Groove Holmes, Jack McDuff, War, Isaac Hayes, Barry White, and some blues.
This is a group I play with for certain concerts hearkening back to the old days when tenor sax players would play together in harmony and going one-up on each other. Willis ‘Gator’ Jackson, Sil Austin, Gene Ammons, Eddie ‘Lockjaw’ Davis, Stanley Turrentine, Coleman Hawkins and others would go long into the night playing this […]
Red Young & His Hot Horns
This is a band I’ve been writing for a long time. I grew up listening to early blues recordings of Jimmy Witherspoon, Ray Charles, Percy Mayfield, Big Joe Turner, Joe Williams – all the blues before the electric guitar became the dominant instrument in the blues. The band has horns – 2 trumpets and 3 […]
Black Red Black
Black Red Black is an organ trio featuring Ephraim Owens on trumpet, Red Young on Hammond B3 organ and Brannen Temple on drums. We sometimes have special guests as we did on our first album – Shelley Carrol on sax, or Gary Clarke, Jr. on guitar. We play straight ahead, soul and traditional jazz as […]
